New Marshall Recycling Center Opening February 7, 2017

Calhoun County is excited to announce the opening of the new Marshall Recycling Center located at 13300 15 Mile Rd., Marshall on February 7, 2017. A ribbon cutting will be scheduled for later on this year. The new center will be open:

Tuesday 10 am – 2 pm

Thursday 2 pm – 6 pm

Saturday 10 am - 2 pm

Recyclers are asked to separate their recycling into the following categories:

- Aluminum

- Tin cans

- Clear uncolored glass

- #1 PET clear plastic bottles

- #2 HDPE milk and water jugs

- #2 HDPE colored plastic bottles

- #1, #3, #5, #6 and #7 mixed rigid plastic containers

- Newspaper and phonebooks

- Cardboard and box board

- Office paper, notebooks, mail, and envelopes

- Magazines and catalogs

- Styrofoam #6

- Household batteries

- Lithium household batteries


It is recommended that you place your sorted items in a cardboard box or paper bag which can be recycled at the center. Reusable recycling bins are also acceptable. Staff will be handing out a limited supply of reusable bags. Recyclers will pull up to the stop sign in front of the recycling center, and staff or volunteers will unload vehicles and load the recycling into the recycling trailers.


Calhoun County will host four household hazardous waste (HHW) collections in 2017. The dates will be April 1 (Recyclerama), May 13, June 24, and September 30. Information on the locations is provided in the upcoming event section of this newsletter. Please call 269-969-6395 for all of your HHW questions.

- Aerosol cans

- Paint thinner/turpentine

- Oil and lead based paint

- Pesticides/herbicides

- Automotive products

- Small propane cylinders

- Household batteries

- Items containing mercury

- Medications

- Fire extinguishers

- Tube and CFL light bulbs

- Sharps (inside coffee can or laundry detergent bottle)


Calhoun County no longer has a contract allowing residents to use the Kalamazoo Household Hazardous Waste Center for free. Residents may still use the center; however they will be charged for the material they drop off.


Meetings of the Solid Waste Management Planning Advisory Committee are held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 4:30 PM at the Calhoun County Building, 315 W. Green St., Marshall in room 1-400.

The Southwest Michigan Solid Waste Consortium has once again applied for a DEQ Scrap Tire Clean-up Grant. Their grant request includes three collections for Calhoun County. Dates for the collections will be released if and when the Consortium is awarded the grant in April.


The Solid Waste Program depends on community volunteers to help staff collection events and the Albion and Marshall Recycling Centers. The Solid Waste Program welcomes all volunteers seeking community service age 10 on up. Volunteers and organizations may volunteer for full or partial shifts. Please consider volunteering and giving back to our community. Team Green members must fill out our volunteer application and sign a volunteer waiver which are available at the Albion Recycling Center, Albion City Hall, Marshall Recycling Center, and
